HERITAGE

Historical Overview of the church: Few churches in the Liverpool Diocese can match the rich heritage of St. Nicholas’ Blundellsands.  Since its consecration in 1874, leading architects and craftsmen have contributed to its beauty while retaining the building as a place of worship, prayer and reflection; a legacy which can be enjoyed by the whole community.

Notable features include the reredos and altar, the WW1 Memorial Rose Window and side panels, the Charles Kempe window, and other stained glass windows in both the north and south side of the church.  Our Heritage Volunteers enable us to open up the church even more to welcome visitors and show them around.  See Visit Us and Heritage Visiting times.

Over the years we have received grants from various funding bodies which has enabled us to carry out major essential repair works and to develop the heritage side of the church’s activities; the outcome of which hopefully shows off the beautiful architectural heritage features within this Grade II Listed building.

Just as important as documenting the history and architecture of the church, is the recording of our social history over the years and telling the story of how it has changed with two World Wars, and more recently the impact of the pandemic of Coronovirus in 2020.
